Marlene's Story

I am 46 years old and finally put a name to a group of symptoms I have been having on and off since I was 18 years old.  I have worked for the Arthritis Foundation, MS Society, and other related groups over the years.  I knew all about symptoms for these but never even heard of Sjogren's until a year ago.

I was diagnosed with acute fibromyalgia and inflammatory arthritis.  Nothing showed up on any tests except a high ANA count.  I've never had much stamina and tired easily.  I didn't have any dry skin problems except a small patch along my hairline.  I did have "allergies" and did take needles for many years...My symptoms were scratchy eyes, sore throats, and lots and lots of sinus problems...My glands would flair up, I would get a low grade fever, and I'd feel like the onset of a flu, but no dry skin.

Three years ago I underwent some stressful episodes, the death of my dad, a major operation, and loss of work because I was too weak to even get out of bed.  Yes, I was depressed, but when I started having trouble swallowing and my glands were so swollen I couldn't wear my favorite choker, I got scared it might be cancer.  I went through many tests that came back negative.  My doctor diagnosed Sjogren's.

I am not a fan of the dentist and for that I am fortunate, I have never had a cavity and now I realize the less I do to cause any kind of extra healing in my body the better off I am.  I don't take shots or any excessive medications.   I do practice visual creativity and autogenics, a form of biofeedback.  I am an artist and now work at home and pace myself.

I also had trouble when I was pregnant, and lost my son 20 years ago of a heart defect and believe Sjogren's had something to do with it, but that is a whole other story.  I am careful where I go because a small cold could lead to a flare up that could last weeks... I used to work in a nursing home but always got sick from the seniors.

A positive outlook and some emotional therapy helps when things get bad.  I have my painting.  I would love to share my pain management therapy with anyone interested. There are wonderful books on the market about healing.. I wish all who read this strength and thanks again, Lynne, for setting up this page.
